Christian Life

Let us sing with joy!

The Lisbon Cathedral Choir was instituted by the former parish priest of the Patriarchal Cathedral – by then director of the Patriarchate’s Liturgy Department –, Father Luís Manuel Pereira da Silva.

He began his activity in July 2011, and had two dignified tasks to accomplish: the recording of a CD in honour of Pope John Paul II, and the production of a music video for the Hymn of his Beatification. Since then, it has played a part in Eucharistic and matrimonial celebrations, choir meetings of St. Cecilia of the Patriarchate of Lisbon, and Christmas and New Year concerts, amongst other initiatives.

The aim of the Lisbon Cathedral Choir is to perform liturgical, religious and sacred compositions on several occasions of the liturgical year – Festivals, Solemnities, Memories –, as well as in performances and concerts, always singing with joy. For “singing with joy is the happiness that words cannot express, that escapes our hearts, beyond our words,” St. Augustine said.

Directed by maestro Luís Filipe Fernandes, its composition varies according to the circumstances and/or works to be interpreted. In addition to technical training, it offers, periodically, spaces for liturgical and spiritual formation.
